Sources of Light

Any object that gives out light is called a source of light. Sources of light can be natural or artificial (man made).

  •   Objects such as sun, stars or insects like the firefly.are an examples of natural sources of light.
  •   Objects such as candle, electric bulb, and laser. are some examples of artificial sources of light.
  • Depending on the size a source of light can be a point source or an extended source.

  • Point Source of light: A source of light that is of the size of the head of a pin. Light rays travel in all direction from the point source in a straight line
  • Extended Source of light: A source of light which is bigger than the point source of light is called extended source of light. Light rays travel in all direction from all the points of an extended light source in a straight line
  • Difference Between a Point Source and Extended Source
